New American Workforce Toolkit
Presenters: Lisa Taylor, IRCNOCO, and Cecilia Moreno, Employment Services of Weld County
Description: Thanks to awesome partners at the Immigrant and Refugee Center of Northern Colorado and the Employment Services of Weld County, the Office of New Americans published Colorado’s first workforce toolkit to help our frontline teams serve immigrants and refugees in their communities. A lot of the information, such as how to learn about who New Americans are in your communities or best practices for outreach, can be applied across different sectors.

A: Creating Conversations: Low-Prep Conversation Groups for All Levels
Presenter: Virginia Vassar Aggrey, Denver Public Library (second presenter TBD)
Description: Participants will learn how to create conversations for in-person and online groups, discover resources they can access quickly with minimal planning time, and learn tips to assess learners’ ability and to engage appropriately with beginner, intermediate and advanced speakers.

B: Insight into the Naturalization Interview
Presenter: Amber Vasek, United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS)
Description: In this session two USCIS Officers will conduct a Mock Naturalization Interview, give tips on common issues, explain some reasons why each interview may be different, and answer your questions. Participants will also receive an online guide focused on teaching resources and assistance in answering a variety of common questions asked during a naturalization preparation class.

A: Choosing and Using Picture Books with Adult English Language Learners
Presenter: Debbie Goldman, Independent ELT Consultant
Description: In this workshop, the presenter will provide criteria to help attendees choose appropriate picture books and give suggestions of specific books that can be used at multiple ESL levels. Attendees will participate in several activities and they will leave the session with ready-to-use activities that they can immediately employ in their classrooms, whether they be virtual or in person.

B: Using Imagery: Tools to Improve Learner Retention
Presenter: Cara Messick, National Jewish Health. ESL Instructor.
Description: This training will discuss the use of imagery to aid adult English learners with retention. Participants will engage in activities to learn how dual coding theory applies to adult learning, identify tools they can use to implement dual coding with students, and learn how to apply the use of imagery in individual learner settings.

A: Scaffolding Content Delivery: Best Practices to Improve Learner Comprehension
Presenter: Cara Messick, National Jewish Health. ESL Instructor.
Description: This training will review the instructional technique of scaffolding in content delivery as a method of improving learner comprehension. Participants will engage in activities to understand scaffolding as a teaching technique, identify best practices for scaffolding, and learn how to fit scaffolding to individual learner settings.

B: Confident Fluency in English Through Stories
Presenter: Suan Schnell, Conversations in English (CIE) Boulder Public Library
Description: Participants will learn how to help students improve their fluency and confidence in English through the listening and re-telling of stories with universal themes, as well as how to teach students to communicate more clearly to express their cultural heritage and personal feelings.
